Grain costs to force New Zealand egg prices up

NEW ZEALAND - The Egg Producers Federation predicts that the rising cost of grain will force egg prices up within the next few months - due to the Australian drought.

The Australian Egg Corporation says prices are likely to rise by 20 to 30 cents a dozen, because egg farmers are no longer able to absorb the increasing cost of grain, which is the single biggest cost in egg production.

New Zealand Egg Producers Federation executive director Michael Brooks says drought and the channeling of grain crops into the American biofuel market are responsible for a global shortage of grain.

He says that will also affect egg prices in New Zealand.
