Print This Page Wealthy countries should fund bird flu aid, says director-general
AUSTRALIA - The head of the World Organisation for Animal Health says wealthy countries should be helping to fund research in developing countries to try to prevent the spread of diseases like bird flu.Director-General Bernard Vallat is visiting Melbourne and he says Australia's biggest threat from bird flu is from Indonesia.
Dr Vallat says it there is no compensation for farmers in poorer countries and there is no guarantee they will speak out about the disease.
"To support developing countries, the first step is good governance regarding veterinary services which are on the front line for prevention and control of avian influenza and of course they need money for infrastructure," he said.
