Traders urge tight control over entry of smuggled meat
PHILIPPINES - The livestock and poultry industry sector in the city is asking the government to press hard in controlling the entry of smuggled meat.Simeon Soriano, Davao City Chamber of Commerce Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) livestock and poultry head, said the entry of smuggled meat is not only affecting the industry but feared that products coming from other countries might not pass the standard.
Soriano said the absence of the safety net is putting the industry in jeopardy.
Likewise, he said the country's being free from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and bird flu, must also be protected.
"Indonesia is very near us, products like meat coming in without passing the proper channel is putting us in danger," he said.
Soriano said there are standards that are being followed for livestock and poultry growing and processing.
Meanwhile, he said the city government must push for the review of the Zoning Ordinance of Davao City.
