Import Of Low Quality Wheat For Poultry Feed Suggested

Chicken has become a formidable competitor of the poor people as far as consumption of staple grain is concerned.

The poultry feed sector is face to face with flourmills in lifting wheat stocks. Chicken and people alike are feeding on the same staple creating a supply issue and destabilising prices.

Stakeholders are irked over feeding top quality wheat to poultry while people are denied the luxury of eating chapatti.

In this regard MINFAL has suggested importing low quality wheat for poultry feed and diverting local wheat back to flourmills instead of chicken farms.

Official spokesman of the MINFAL while talking to scribe suggested allowing import of low-grade wheat for fodder and feeds.

Otherwise, it is impossible for the government to prime quality grain, as TCP’s last week tenders for the wheat were quoted as $445 per tonne whereas the wheat for fodder could be imported much below the quoted rate the official argued.
