Bad For Many …But Good for the Christmas Goose
UK - The wet summer may have been bad news for many people ….but it's been great for Christmas geese, according to Judy Goodman, chairman of British Goose Producers.
In contrast to 2006 when heatwave weather dried up early summer grazing, the geese this year have enjoyed plenty of lush pasture and are looking in peak condition around the country.
"Our members produce free range geese which thrive on good quality grass which has been plentiful this year," says Mrs Goodman, who rears more than 4000 geese at Great Witley, near Worcester. "This will benefit the flavour and texture of British geese on the market this Christmas."
With chefs and food writers re-discovering the delights of a traditional festive goose, demand is likely to be the highest for many decades and her advice is to order early.
"We often hear people talking about the need to order early for a goose - but it really is good advice this year. British geese are not intensively produced, they're reared in relatively small numbers and although more farmers are starting to produce geese there's a limit as to how much we can expand from one year to the next."
