The price of chicken meat in Lahore is between Rs 90 to Rs 95 per kg while a couple of weeks back, it was being sold at Rs 105-115 per kg. The industry experts said that the prices would roam between Rs 90 and Rs 100 in the coming days because of Eid and Ashura.

“Normally, the consumption of chicken meat drops considerably after Eidul Azha and Ashura,” said former chairman of Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) Punjab Raza Khursand. He said that chicken production in the last weeks has risen due to ideal weather conditions for production. “Normally each person in the country consumes around 7 Kg of chicken meat annually,” Khursand said adding that the price of chicken might increase after the month of Muharram.

Syed Javaid Hussain Bukhari, Secretary, PPA (Punjab Zone) said that good production has resulted in drop of chicken prices. He said that the price might not decline from that present level because of higher production cost. “Selling chicken at this level is not attractive for the breeder but for staying in business, it is necessary,” said a chicken breeder Mehmood Sheikh. He said that though people are quite happy because of lower chicken prices but prolong scenario would harm the trade. He said that now a days farmers invest around Rs 88 per kg on a chick for getting its meat.
