Bhutan Baker Breaks the Egg Ban
BHUTAN - The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) slapped a fine of Nu 25,000 on a baker for attempting to illegally import 50 cartons of eggs through Bhutan Gate in Phuentsholing.According to the officer in charge of BAFRA, Ugyen Dorji, the seized eggs heading towards Paro, were neatly packed in cartons and hidden among flour sacks loaded in a private DCM truck.
He told Kuensel that, on interrogation, it was revealed that both the eggs and the flour had been bought from a Jaigaon supermarket at a cheap rate for baking purposes. “This is the first time we’re seeing a huge amount of eggs being illegally imported,” he said.
Import of poultry products was banned earlier this year on January 16, whereas the ban on meat items, including fish, had been lifted on March 8. “The 10,500 eggs seized in all will be disposed off in the biological pit,” said Ugyen Dorji.
