A decision on whether to halt the use of poultry litter as fertilizer in the Illinois River watershed is in the hands of a Tulsa federal judge now that a hearing on the matter wrapped up Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Gregory Frizzell said he would issue a written order with "deliberate speed" following the hearing, which took nine days. It featured claims of "bogus statistics" and "junk science" from both sides.

Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson urged Frizzell to grant a preliminary injunction against the use of the litter. Edmondson said the claims by the poultry industry that the litter isn't connected to health risks in the wa tershed also could be made about tobacco and lung cancer.

In both cases, Edmondson claimed, the evidence points to just such a link.
