Could Chickens Help Ease Poverty?

AUSTRALIA - Professor David Farrell from the University of Queensland is one of the organizers of the World Poultry Congress being held in Brisbane this week.

He says improved management practices would increase poultry production in poorer countries and provide communities with an important source of animal protein, reports ABC Brisbane.

"They call them backyard chickens or scavenging chickens. Although they are poor producers, they don't produce many eggs, they don't grow very fast but then there is no input to keep them," he told the news agency.

"They feed them very little but they produce very important small amounts of meat and eggs."
