Print This Page PETA Turns Attention to KFC in India
INDIA - The animal welfare campaigning group is calling on the parent company of KFC in India - Yum! Restaurants International - to follow KFC Canada's lead by taking action to improve poultry welfare.Pressured by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in Canada recently pledged to improve animal welfare standards.
Following on from this success, PETA has made the same demands of KFC in India, according to India PR Wire.
The actions cover the following:
- Phasing in the sourcing of chicken meat from suppliers who use controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS), which is regarded as the stunning method causing least distress to birds.
- Improvements in animal welfare audit criteria to reduce the number of broken bones and other injuries suffered by birds.
- Encouraging suppliers to adopt better practices regarding lighting, stocking density and ammonia levels, and a phasing out of growth promoting drugs.
- Formation of an animal welfare advisory panel.
