Farmers Warn of Poultry Industry Collapse

NIGERIA - A poultry association warns that the industry faces imminent collapse over feed shortages.

Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Ogun State (PANOG), Jide Olaniyan, has warned that the industry faces imminent collapse if the government does not intervene in the acute shortage of grains, which are needed for poultry feed, reports Punch.

He explained that the shortage of grains - the major ingredient for poultry feed - is threatening the ability of farmers to meet market demand.

The situation threatens the export of poultry products to neighbouring West African countries, worth 9 billion naira (NGN), Mr Olaniyan told a press conference in Abeokuta on 17 July.

Furthermore, he said, 30 per cent of poultry farmers have already been forced out of business and at this rate, there will be no poultry farmers left in production by December.

These, Mr Olaniyan explained, are the reasons for his urgent cry for the government to save the situation before it gets out of control.
