Inaugurating a two-day international conference on ‘Emerging infectious diseases of animals and biotechnological applications’ organised by the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Mr. Palanisamy said the State took the decision in the wake of avian influenza to help poultry farmers continue export after certification.

P.R. Shampath, Commissioner of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, said vaccines and diagnostics, the backbone of control strategies, needed to be improved.

According to The Hindu, the improvement had to be based on the genome characters of the causative agents. The vaccines needed to provide long-lasting immunity, besides being thermo-stable to overcome the problems in the cold-chain maintenance, he said.
