Russia, U.S. Agree Poultry Import Quota Cut

RUSSIA - Group lobbies from Russia and the USA have announced that they have agreed in principle to reduce the tariff quotas on US imports of poultry meat into Russia from next year.

US Poultry and Eggs Export Council (USAPEEC) and the Russian Poultry Meat Market Operators Association have signed an agreement to propose to the governments of both countries a reduction in the 2009 US tariff quota to 750,000 tonnes from 931,500 tonnes.

They have also agreed to propose lower quotas for the next three years, preliminarily set at 630,000 tonnes for 2010, 550,000 tonnes for 2011 and 500,000 tonnes for 2012.

Under the deal, the US share should be no lower than 75 percent of the total import quota.

USAPEEC president Jim Sumner commented, "We do not know what the exact quota next year is going to be, as there exists an agreement between the two governments."
