Print This Page Belgium Investigates Trafficking of Spoiled Chicken
BELGIUM - The Belgian judicial system is investigating a huge trafficking operation in which spoiled chicken meat was taken from stocks constituted during the dioxin crisis and exported to Ukraine, where it was processed before being imported back into the EU in the form of hamburgers or sausages, the Belgian press revealed yesterday.Some 1,400 tonnes of this meat, unfit for human consumption, have been seized in Ukraine, according to Europolitics. At least four companies are involved in the trafficking. They are based in Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands, the four countries affected in 1999 by the case of dioxin-contaminated poultry feed. The exact origin of the meat is not yet known.
