Philippines Lifts Ban on Poultry from Virginia

THE PHILIPPINES - Effective January 25 2008, the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) issued a memorandum (Memorandum No.2) wherein the temporary ban on imports of poultry and poultry products from the State of Virginia was lifted.

USDA Foreign Agricultural Service

The ban was imposed last year after a report from USDA of a detection of low pathogenic avian influenza in the State.

DA Memorandum Order No. 2 (2008) was issued by the Philippine Secretary of Agriculture upon completion of an evaluation by the Bureau of Animal Industry on the risk contamination from importing poultry and poultry products from Virginia. This evaluation was based on a USDA/APHIS final report to the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) on the cleaning and disinfection activities conducted on 4 August 2007.

The United States exported over $25 million worth of poultry and poultry products to the Philippines last year, up nearly 60 per cent from the previous year. With the lifting of the ban on Virginia, Nebraska (GAIN RP8004) and West Virginia (in October 2007), all poultry and poultry products from all states are now eligible for export to the Philippines.
