Shell Eggs Broken up Two Per Cent from Last Year

US - The number of shell eggs broken was up slightly in December 2008 compared to the previous year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in their monthly Egg Products Report.

Shell eggs broken totaled 163 million dozen during December 2008, up two per cent from December a year ago, and two per cent above the 160 million broken last month.

December 2008 contained 23 weekdays (including one holiday) and four Saturdays. December 2007 contained 21 weekdays (including one holiday) and 5 Saturdays.

During calendar year 2008 through December, shell eggs broken totaled 2.05 billion dozen, up three per cent from the comparable period in 2007. To date, cumulative total edible product from eggs broken in 2008 was 2.68 billion pounds, up three per cent from 2007.

Data presented in this report were compiled from Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) inspection reports. The best available data at the time of publication were used.
