Monthly US Turkey Hatchery Report

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), turkey eggs in incubators went down seven per cent and nine per cent fewer poults were hatched during March compared to a year ago.

Eggs in Incubators on 1 April Down Seven Per Cent from Last Year

Turkey eggs in incubators on 1 April 2009, in the United States totaled 29.6 million, down seven per cent from 1 April 2008. Eggs in incubators were up 5 per cent from the 1 March 2009 total of 28.1 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down one per cent, West North Central down 1 per cent, North and South Atlantic down 10 per cent, and South Central and West down 21 per cent.

Poults Hatched During March Down Nine Per Cent from Last Year

Turkey poults hatched during March 2009, in the United States totaled 24.5 million, down nine per cent from March 2008. Poults hatched were up seven per cent from February 2009 total of 22.9 million poults. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down three per cent, West North Central down four per cent, North and South Atlantic down three per cent, and South Central and West down 41 per cent.

Net Poults Placed During March Down Nine Per Cent from Last Year

The 23.9 million net poults placed during March 2009 in the United States were down nine per cent from the number placed during the same month a year earlier. Net placements were up 8eight per cent from the February 2009 total of 22.1 million.
