Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - This week, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that the number of eggs set was down six per cent, and there were five per cent fewer broiler chicks placed.

Broiler-Type Eggs Set In 19 Selected States Down 6 Per Cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 201 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 25 April 2009. This was down six per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler Chicks Placed Down 5 Per Cent

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 169 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 25 April 2009. Placements were down five per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 28 December 2008 to 25 April 2009 were 2.85 billion, down six per cent from the same period a year earlier.
