The award – a plaque and $2,500 – was presented during the recent Poultry Science Association annual meeting.

Poultry and Egg News reports that the award is given in recognition of distinctive research having a strong economic impact on the broiler industry.

Dr Buhr was recognised for his work in humane slaughter resulting in eliminating potentially semi-conscious birds entering the scalder, as well as cadavers. He was also recognised for his work relating to food safety, which includes identifying and mitigating routes for carcass contamination and an improved, inexpensive, litter sampling method for the detection of salmonella in broiler and breeder houses.
