Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that, compared to the same week last year, the number of broiler-type eggs set was down two per cent, and one per cent fewer chicks were placed than a year previously.

Broiler-Type Eggs Set in 19 Selected States Down Two Per Cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 182 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 31 October 2009. This was down two per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent.

Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler Chicks Placed Down One Per Cent

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 157 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 31 October 2009. Placements were down one per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 28 December 2008 to 31 October 2009 were 7.33 billion, down four per cent from the same period a year earlier.
