Foreign-made chicken favoured in Vietnam

VIETNAM - US-sourced chicken is one of the best sellers at Intimex supermarket as Hanoians believe in the quality and safety of products imported from the US, Intimex Sales Manager Thu Ha said.

The Nguyen Hoang Duong Trading company has been the only importer of American chicken in Hanoi for the last 7-8 months. The bird flu epidemic prompted Nguyen Trong Thai, the company director, to think of importing chicken from the US.

The company then contacted Gold Kitchen, which has the second biggest turnover from poultry products in the US ($4.2bil in 2004).

Excluding Big C and Metro retailers, who have their own sources for import, all other supermarkets sell the chicken provided by Nguyen Hoang Duong with the consumed volume of several tens of tonnes so far.

A 0.7-0.8 kg package of ‘safe’ chicken legs imported from the US is selling at the ‘soft’ price of VND32, 000 ($2).
