Demat trains poultry farmers
MALAWI - The Development of Malawian Enterprises Trust (Demat) has trained poultry farmers in feeds production. The training, which took place in Mzuzu last week, drew participants from across the country.Closing the training on Friday, Demat General Manager Judith Chirwa said poultry farming faced a lot of difficulties due to high cost of feeds.
“Poultry farming in the country meets a lot of challenges, among the top most being high cost of feed and sometimes scarcity of feed and feed freshness. As a result, a number of smallholder farmers closed their poultry business last year when maize, a major ingredient was not available,” she said.
Chirwa explained that her organisation felt it has an obligation in helping government impart feed making skills so that there is increased production of cheaper chickens and eggs.
“Malawi should feed its people with adequate chicken and eggs produced in its own country. It should not only depend on beef whose population is declining as human population increases,” she said.
