Valuable vaccination advice - UK - Practical hints and tips on drinking water vaccination against salmonella in poultry, as well as detailed technical information, are given in a new eight-page leaflet produced by Dr Michael Iburg, chief veterinary surgeon for Lohmann Animal Health, and his colleagues.

He outlines the importance of vaccination, the benefits of the oral method (which mimics the natural infection route), how to mix the vaccine and the effects of water quality and drinking systems, in a clear, easy-to-understand, way.

Dr Iburg points out that the earlier the live oral vaccine is administered, the better the immunity levels and advises that primary vaccination should be carried out within the first few days after the chicks first arrive on the farm.

Administering vaccine via the drinking system is recognised as being a quick, simple and effective method of immunising large numbers of birds without stress while being cost-efficient and the leaflet is designed to help farmers achieve the optimum results from it.

Copies of "Drinking water vaccination against salmonella - a proven concept also in day-old chicks" are available, free from Adam Goddard, Lohmann Animal Health on 01948 841 584.
