Bob Turley joined Allen last week as president and chief executive, the company said in a statement to Delaware Online. Mr Turley succeeds Charles C. Allen III, who will continue as chairman.

"Bob is an experienced and well-known veteran to the poultry industry and we look forward to having him lead our company," Mr Allen said in a statement.

Mr Turley, a native of south-east Missouri, was president and general manager of Carolina Turkeys and also worked at ConAgra Foods Inc. He joined Perdue (based in Salisbury, Maryland) in 1993 as president and chief operating officer.

Mr Turley, who declined to be interviewed, postponed a planned retirement from Perdue in 2004 to lead the company's international division. He ultimately retired from Perdue in March 2008.

Allen was founded in 1919 as Allen's Hatchery by Charles C. and Nellie G. Allen, who moved the business to Seaford in 1935. The company employs more than 3,000 people at locations in Delaware, Maryland and North Carolina.
