Siler City is losing its biggest employer, reports NBC17.

The Townsend poultry plant will cease operations as of 1 October, Siler City mayor, Charles Johnson, said yesterday.

There are 550 employees at the Siler City location. They also have 150 contract producers in the five-county surrounding area and roughly another 125 at a plant in Mocksville.

Townsend is the largest employer in Siler City. Mayor Johnson said this is the second poultry plant the town has lost in the last four years.
