The company told Winnipegfreepress that it met with local government officials and others in the northwestern New Brunswick community of Edmundston last Wednesday, to implement a hiring plan for the new operation.

Sunnymel is a partnership between Quebec meat processing giant, Olymel and Westco, a New Brunswick poultry operator.

The company said it is looking for labourers, electricians, skilled and unskilled mechanics, office, safety and other staff for the plant.

The Sunnymel slaughterhouse and cutting plant are slated to begin operating next fall, with a weekly processing capacity of 450,000 birds.

Groupe Westco Inc. owns its own hatcheries, breeding farms and shipping companies and is one of the largest chicken processors in Canada.

Olymel is one of Canada's biggest pork and chicken producers, with 10,000 employees and plants in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta.

Olymel has C$2 billion in annual sales and exports nearly half its production, mainly to the United States, Japan and Australia.
