185,000 Hens Slaughtered to Contain Salmonella Outbreak

NORTHERN IRELAND, UK - Following the outbreak of fowl typhoid at an egg producing company in County Fermanagh, around 185,000 hens have been slaughtered.

Charles Crawford, director of Ready Egg Products, which had 125,000 of its hens slaughtered, told the Belfast Telegraph that the birds started dying about four weeks ago and the company culled about a third of the flock to stop the disease spreading.

The newspaper reported that the disease does not affect humans but it can kill 100 per cent of an infected flock.
