Further H5N1 Outbreak in Nepal

NEPAL - A further outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 has occurred in Nepal.

The outbreak was reported to the OIE by Dr Nar Bahadur Rajwar, Director General, Department of Livestock Services, Department of Livestock Services in Lalitpur, Nepal.

The outbreak started on 27 August at Sanepa-2, Sanchal, Lalitpur in Bagmati.

The latest outbreak occured in Madhyapur Thimi Municipality -3, Bode, Bhaktapur in the region of Bagmati.

Reduced egg production with irregular shape and sized eggs was noticed in a commercial layer farm. High mortality was recorded in the affected farm.

In total, there were 1,220 new cases, resulting in 780 birds being destroyed.

All remaining birds and poultry product and poultry production materials were destroyed and the infected premises was cleaned and disinfected.

Post-operative surveillance activities are continuing throughout the country. No further outbreaks have been recorded.

The cause of the outbreak remains unknown.
