The VFDs work by varying the speed of the motor to match rising and falling air demand instead of steady speed and using modulation to vary this workload. When the system operates at less than 100 per cent load, the variable speed drive allows the compressor to consume less electrical power than any other motor control method.

By adapting speed to output, Sullivan-Palatek compressors keep working at maximum efficiency reducing power consumption and there for conserving energy costs. Energy is approximately 87 per cent of the total cost of a compressor system.
