Genetic Material Keeps Poultry Figure Positive

BRAZIL – Brazilian poultry exports earned more in 2013 because of genetic exports, despite overall drops in volume, reveals the country's industry organisation.

The Brazilian Poultry Union (UBABEF) announced poultry revenue increased 2.3 per cent to $8.55 billion and weighted exports saw a 1.5 per cent fall to 4.07 million tons.

Genetic material exports helped the revenue surge, which kept poultry positive.

UBABEF chief executive officer, Francisco Turra, said: "The Brazilian poultry industry kept the critical role in the outcome of the Brazilian agribusiness exports, with 8.6 per cent of the $99.97 billion released by the Ministry of Agriculture.”

Total Production

Poultry meat and egg output increased 2.6 and 7.4 per cent, respectively, although broiler housing contracted by almost one per cent last year.

Consumer data showed average per-capita poultry meat consumption was 41.8 pounds per year.

Egg production reached 34.12 billion, of which an average Brazilian ate 168.7 per year.

Turkey output plummeted 18 per cent, reaching 364,000 tons.
