Libya Reports First H5N1 Avian Flu Outbreak

LIBYA - The country's first outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian flu has been reported in a village poultry flock in Tubruq in the north-east of the country.

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 12 March to the World Organisation of Animal Production (OIE).

The outbreak started on 4 March at Kroum Alkhai in Tubruq. A total of 19 birds from a flock of 45 local backyard chickens and five ducks were affected, 15 of which died and the rest have been destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 subtype of the virus has been confirmed.
