The final report of the EFSA’s FLURISK project was published last week. It proposes a tool to rank animal influenza strains according to their potential to infect humans.

Influenza viruses circulating in animals pose a public health risk as they can develop the ability to infect humans. Moreover, if viruses acquire the ability to spread easily from person to person, they can cause a pandemic.

FLURISK brings together internationally recognised research institutes and reference laboratories, international agencies and universities from veterinary and human medicine areas across the European Union.
