Health Official Approves of Mexican Poultry Standards

MEXICO – Mexico’s poultry sector, particularly farms in Puebla, have been dubbed ‘world class’ by a government official on bird health and biosecurity grounds following earlier avian flu.

Enrique Sanchez Cruz, chief director of the National Health Food Safety and Quality Service (SENASICA), reiterated praise for producers in controlling avian influenza A (H7N3).

Speaking after a visit of farms across the region, Mr Sanchez Cruz described “a pillar of agri-food competitiveness".

He said this is ‘proof’ of a cooperative industry which has managed to stabilise egg prices.

This is a ‘joint achievement’ between producers and health authorities, he added.

He called for further progress in utilising and storing poultry manure, laying down a 100 per cent recycle target for composting or other uses in the interests of biosecurity.

Mexico's eggs production depends on Puebla, at 47 per cent of national output. SENASICA added that sector employment in the region is at 201,000.
