Eight New Bird Flu Outbreaks in Nigeria

NIGERIA - Highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype has been reported in eight more poultry flocks in the southern states of Nigeria.

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No.2 dated 26 January to the World Organisation for Animal Science (OIE).

It describes eight new outbreaks of high-path avian flu in the states of Lagos, Ogun, Oyu, Edo and Rivers in zoos and farms, involving a range of birds, including layer and growing chickens. The outbreaks started between 13 and 23 January.

In total, 28,274 birds were involved, 12,055 died and 12,037 have been destroyed.
