Nigeria Reports Seven New Outbreaks of Bird Flu in Poultry

NIGERIA - The highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 variant has been identified as the cause of seven new outbreaks of the disease in poultry in the last week in the north and centre of the country.

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up report No.2 dated 23 January to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

It outlines seven new outbreaks of avian flu between 11 and 21 January, six in the northern state of Kano and one in centrally located Plateau state.

In total, 36,684 birds were involved, with 2,015 showing symptoms; around 2,000 birds died and 298 were destroyed.
