Bulgaria Reports First Avian Flu Outbreak in Domestic Poultry
BULGARIA - The first outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza has been reported in domestic poultry - in the same region as the dead wild bird last month. The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No.1 dated 4 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
The report describes one new outbreak, starting on 30 January, of H5N1 high-path avian flu in a backyard poultry flock in Burgas in the region of the same name in the far east of the country. Twenty of the 22 birds in the flock died; the other two were culled.
Contact with wild species is the most likely source of infection; a wild pelican tested positive for the virus in the same area previously.
The last outbreak of avian flu in the country was in June 2010.
