Hungary Reports First Outbreak of H5N8 Avian Flu in Poultry

HUNGARY - An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N8 has been confirmed in a meat duck flock in the east of the country.

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 25 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report outlines the first outbreak since 2007 of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a poultry flock at Füzesgyarmat in Békés county in a flock of 21,170 meat ducks.

On 23 February 2015, a suspicion of avian influenza was reported to the National Food Chain Safety Office. The local authority immediately visited the affected holding. Neurological signs, nasal discharge and increased mortality were observed.

Official samples were taken and the following day, the National Reference Laboratory confirmed the presence of the avian influenza virus of the H5N8 strain.

Near the affected farm are three contact holdings. All the birds kept on the affected and the contact holdings will be killed and destroyed.
