Bhutan Reports High-Path Bird Flu in Backyard Flock

BHUTAN - A backyard flock of poultry has tested positive for H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza.

According to an Immediate Report dated 16 April from the Ministry of Agriculture to the World Organisation from Animal Health (OIE), a backyard poultry flock has tested positive for the H5N1 subtype of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus.

The outbreak started on 3 April at Motithang City Camp in Thimphu, resulting in the deaths of 16 birds of the flock of 37.

The presence of the H5N1 subtype of the virus has been confirmed and the remaining 21 birds have been destroyed.

There are no other poultry flocks in the immediate area.

The last outbreak of bird flu in Bhutan was in April 2013.
