Outbreak of Avian Flu in Backyard Poultry in Palestine

PALESTINIAN TERRITORY - A backyard flock in the Gaza Strip has been confirmed with highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5 sub-type.

According to Follow-up Report No.1 dated 13 April from the veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), there has been one new outbreak of high-path avian flu in the Territory.

The outbreak began on 11 April in a backyard flock of 150 birds in the Gaza Strip. Around 90 of the birds were affected; 60 of them died and the rest of the flock has been destroyed.

The presence of an H5 variant of the virus has been confirmed.
