Ryan Gosling in Row Over Cage Egg Letter

US - Film star Ryan Gosling spoke out against the use of cages in the egg supply chain this week, but an organisation supporting the use of cages later claimed his own restaurant uses a non-cage-free egg supplier.

A campaign from the Humane Society of the United States had revealed an undercover video of caged egg layer conditions at a supplier for US wholesaler Costco, and following the campaign Mr Gosling sent an open letter to Costco.

In the letter, he described the conditions in the undercover video as "abhorrent cruelty", and asked Costco to go completely cage-free for its eggs in future, saying: "So many corporations are meeting public demand for more humane products and transparency in the food chain."

However, the Center for Consumer Freedom later published another letter, claiming: "The restaurant he (Mr Gosling) co-owns purchases eggs from a large retail wholesaler that provides non-cage-free eggs - and even sources eggs from the same Costco supplier he condemns."

The organisation described Mr Gosling's original letter as hypocritical, saying: “Before asking another business to cave to your activist demands, you should make sure your own kitchen is in order.”
