The event celebrated the achievements of Ross customers in the UK and showed that, once again, there have been year on year performance improvements for both the Ross 308 and Ross 708.

Aviagen® Regional Technical and Commercial Manager Alan Thomson welcomed the 50-strong guests to the awards ceremony.

Commenting on the Awards, Alan said: “This is an event designed for our customers, for the people who work with and manage Ross stock. Our customers are among the best in the industry by any standard.

"These UK Flock Awards are one way that allows us to recognise and reward the commitment and stockmanship involved. Aviagen customers have continued to exceed goals in the biological performance of Ross birds and we want to celebrate that achievement.”

Stuart Thomson, Technical Service Manager, gave a review of 2014 performance. Commenting on the Ross performance for 2014, Stuart said: “We are pleased to see improvement in biological performance trends of Ross flocks over the last 12 months.

"The Ross 308, for example, has seen a 1% improvement in egg numbers and a continual rise in hatch which has resulted in an increase of just over 3 chicks per bird through the year.”

As is tradition with the UK Flock Awards, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of outdoor activities, prior to the evening’s formal celebrations. In the year that the Rugby World Cup comes to the UK, the group was also treated to an engaging and entertaining guest speaker in Doddie Weir, the former Scottish Rugby player.

Donna Brock, Moy Park, summed up the experience: “We had a really enjoyable day. The activities are a great ice breaker to bring everyone together and the setting was superb. It was great for the farmers to meet people that do the same as them, day in, day out, and exchange their thoughts and experiences. Everyone felt recognised and got a well-deserved pat on the back!”

Stuart and Alan were joined on the day by Glenn Bushell and Chris Chater, who make up the rest of the Aviagen UK and Western Europe team. Chris commenced his new position last month and adds extensive poultry industry experience and knowledge to the team, following previous broiler and breeder management roles.

Richard Millar of Faccenda, who attended the full day’s activities and award ceremony, said: “We had a fantastic day at the Ross UK Flock Awards. The afternoon activities were thoroughly enjoyable and the award ceremony itself was excellent, including some very motivating speeches.”
