Limited information was available in Dr Rubina Cresencio's report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

However, the report confirmed that the virus is now distributed in Tarlac, Pampanga, Laguna, Nueva Ecija and Manila.

An increase in poultry mortalities from the disease has been observed since typhoon Nona hit the Philippines in December 2015.

Contact with wild species, introduction of new live animals, and legal and illegal movement of animals are all thought to have exacerbated the spread of the disease.

Local media reports suggest that some poultry farmers have had to cease operations to cut their losses from Newcastle disease.
