Mexico Highlights Importance of Avian Flu Eradication Strategy

By: That's according to the Director General of the animal health and food safety (SENASICA), Joaquín Delgadillo Alvarez, during his participation in an international summit on the disease.
He stressed the importance of the control system for the disease in Mexico and the importance of the contingency plan for the future.
He explained that the strategy involves health safety regulation, protection and is mainly based on the protocols established by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
Mr Alvarez noted that to carry out this strategy involves having a strong regulatory framework, control of movement and access for poultry products at the border, and active and passive surveillance in producing farms and in wild birds.
He stressed the importance of transparent and timely reporting to international organisations when diseases are present, which builds trust between trading partners and leads to safe food trade.
Mr Alvarez said Brazil's veterinary infrastructure allowed the country to identify the H7N3 pathogen in an outbreak in Jalisco in 2012 within 72 hours.
