Tesco Aims for Less Waste with New Chicken Breast Packaging

UK - Supermarket chain Tesco is introducing new packaging for its two portion chicken fillets this week, aiming to allow consumers to eat one and save one for later in a bid to reduce food waste.

The new packet has a separate compartment for each fillet, with a tear seal between the two. This provides an easier storage solution for people to either freeze or refrigerate the other fillet after using one.

"The packaging has been developed in partnership with our poultry supplier Cargill and their packaging supplier Linpac and we will be looking to roll this out nationally to all stores as soon as possible," said Matt Simister, Tesco's Commercial Director for Fresh Food and Commodities.

He added: "We will not be charging a premium to our customers for the pack, compared to the existing packaging. Tesco will be absorbing the extra production costs because we want to help our customers reduce food waste without asking them to pay anything extra."
