USDA supports antimicrobial resistance research

The aim of the research is to reduce any potential negative impacts from the use of antibiotics, especially those used to treat human diseases, and to identify alternative strategies for mitigating AMR in the food chain.

At the University of Georgia, for instance, research shows there may be more antimicrobial resistant salmonella in our food animals than scientists previously thought.

At the University of Tennessee researchers have identified oxidisers, such as chlorine and UV light, that remove antibiotics from septic system wastewater. The ability to remove these antibiotics could help prevent the emergence of antibiotic resistant microbes.
