The Montana Department of Agriculture confirmed a case of avian influenza in a backyard chicken flock in Flathead County last week.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed 399 outbreaks this year, impacting 40.14 million birds. Of those, 210 were in backyard flocks.

Montana has had no confirmed cases in commercial flocks, but 10 backyard flocks have been impacted. Iowa was the most heavily hit state this season so far. It has had 15 affected commercial flocks, 4 affected backyard flocks, and a total of 13,374,204 birds affected in this outbreak.

Most cases can be traced back to the seasonal migration of wild birds.wild
