Animal protein prices rose in the last year, with the largest increases for condensed milk, bacon and pasteurized milk, according to Grupo Consultor de Mercados Agrícolas (GCMA).

In August 2022, a kilo of condensed milk sold for almost 74 pesos and for the same month of 2023 at 80 pesos, an increase of 8.6%. While the kilo of bacon went from 338 pesos to 362 pesos in the same period, an increase of almost 7%.

Pasteurised milk rose from 21.90 pesos to 23.2 pesos from August 2022 to the same month of 2023, a 5.8% increase. Milk powder rose from 136 pesos to 140 pesos in the last 12 months. Increased costs for producers was cited as the cause.

Meanwhile, a kilo of ham sold for 155 pesos in August 2022 and rose to almost 163 pesos in the last 12 months.

Eggs have remained more or less stable, rising from 48.9 pesos per kilo to 50.8 pesos in the last 12 months. Current prices are, however, lower than last July's price.

Beef, sausage and chicken meat prices all rose by 2%, GCMA said.

"The animal protein price index shows an annual increase of 4.2% and a monthly decrease slightly 0.4%," the consultancy said.
