Turkey breast slices from Australian grocery chain Harris Farm Markets that were mislabelled as “Made using 100% Australian Pork” were not sold in the United Kingdom, the company told Reuters.

Social media posts on X and Facebook shared a photo of the wrongly labelled packaging with the caption: “WTF is this abomination…is this what UK now to look forward to thru relaxation of food standards” and “a brexit benefit maybe . Or a brexit freedom to sell you shite.”

Some users reacted to the photograph believing the claimed association with Brexit true, with comments such as “Brexit, in a nutshell…,” “This is atrocious…..is this really what people wanted from Brexit???,” and “Brexit bonus for sure!!”

The producer, Australia-based Harris Farm Markets, which has grocery store locations across Sydney, New South Wales, and Queensland, told Reuters that the incident happened in 2022 and was “a labelling error by our supplier”.

The spokesperson said the company only delivers products locally in Australia and does not ship to the United Kingdom.

The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) told Reuters via email that the UK does not currently import turkey from Australia.

The product itself is no longer present on Harris Farm Markets’ online shop.
