US Salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry
CDC investigates multi-state outbreakThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Mbandaka infections associated with contact with backyard poultry.
As of April 24, 2025, seven cases have been reported across six states, with illnesses occurring between February 9 and March 24. No hospitalisations or deaths have been reported.
Epidemiologic and laboratory data indicate that contact with backyard poultry is the likely source of the outbreak. Of the seven individuals with available information, five reported contact with backyard poultry prior to illness onset. Samples collected from poultry shipping materials in Ohio tested positive for the outbreak strain.
The CDC advises backyard poultry owners to practice good hygiene, including thorough handwashing after handling birds or their environments, and to supervise young children around poultry to prevent infection.
