Brazil chicken meat prices plunge after bird flu confirmation
Export bans and weak domestic demand drive down market valuesTwo weeks after Brazil confirmed an outbreak of avian influenza, chicken meat prices fell sharply in the domestic market, according to Cepea data from late May.
Export restrictions imposed by trade partners—including the European Union and 24 other countries—have curtailed shipments, leading to a surplus of chicken meat in the domestic market.
At the same time, consumer demand softened, particularly due to reduced purchasing power at the end of the month, reinforcing the downward pressure on prices.
In the first 16 working days of May, Brazil exported 19.9 thousand tonnes of chicken meat—a sharp 9.6% drop compared to April and 2% below May 2024 levels. The current daily average of shipments, at 19.8 thousand tonnes, is the lowest recorded since January.
